How venue booking works in Stockholm

The City of Stockholm approves a number of venues for civil ceremonies. All time slots across all venues are pooled into a single booking system at etjanster.stockholm.se — you do not choose a venue directly. Instead, you select an available time slot and the venue comes with it.

Availability varies enormously by venue and day. Iconic locations like Stadshuset and Vinterträdgården fill instantly; district office venues tend to have broader availability. All slots are shared in real time and openings appear without notice whenever a couple cancels.

Stadshuset (City Hall) — the iconic choice

Stockholm City Hall on the waterfront at Riddarfjärden is one of the world's most celebrated wedding venues. It is where the Nobel Banquet is held every December — and where countless couples dream of exchanging vows. The ceremony takes place in its storied interiors, with history and grandeur on every wall.

  • –Demand — extreme. Saturday slots in spring and summer are booked months in advance and disappear in seconds when they become available.
  • –Guest numbers — limited by the ceremony room configuration; contact the City of Stockholm for exact figures.
  • –Cost — included in the standard ceremony fee when at least one partner is registered as a resident in Stockholm.
City Hall slots vanish almost immediately. With Vigsel Alert, you receive a notification the instant a City Hall slot appears in your date range — without refreshing the page yourself.

Vinterträdgården — the winter garden courtyard

Vinterträdgården is a sought-after venue adjacent to City Hall. Its glass-covered courtyard creates a bright, intimate atmosphere — different in character from the grand ceremonial halls. Popular year-round and particularly loved for its lighter, airy feel.

  • –Atmosphere — enclosed glass courtyard; light and neutral, suits a range of ceremony styles.
  • –Demand — high, but typically slightly easier to secure than the main City Hall rooms.

Bondepalatset — Baroque grandeur in Gamla stan

Bondepalatset on Riddarhustorget in the Old Town (Gamla stan) is a 17th-century Baroque palace and one of Stockholm's most historic buildings. It offers an intimate yet grand setting with Gamla stan as backdrop — a favourite for couples seeking something historic and slightly more unusual than City Hall.

  • –Location — Gamla stan, central Stockholm.
  • –Character — historic, intimate, original Baroque interior.
  • –Availability — limited slots; fills quickly.

District offices and local ceremony rooms

Beyond the landmark venues, the City of Stockholm offers ceremonies at district offices distributed across the municipality. These are typically simpler in decor but carry an important advantage: broader availability and shorter lead times.

  • –Best for — couples who prioritise a specific date over a specific venue, or who want an intimate ceremony without the fanfare of a landmark setting.
  • –Availability — typically wider than City Hall or Bondepalatset; new slots appear regularly.
  • –Practical — shorter travel time if you live in a particular neighbourhood.

Outdoor ceremonies — a seasonal option

During the summer months, the City of Stockholm occasionally offers outdoor ceremonies in parks, on quaysides, or in gardens. The offering varies year to year and is subject to suitable weather conditions.

  • –Season — typically June through August.
  • –Weather — ceremonies may be moved indoors in heavy rain; a backup venue is usually offered.
  • –Demand — high on sunny weekends.

How to choose (and get) the venue you want

In the etjanster.stockholm.se system, you pick an available date and time — and the venue is tied to that specific slot. You cannot filter for "City Hall on a Saturday" directly; you book a slot that happens to be at City Hall.

In practice, the fastest path to your dream venue is to monitor the system continuously and act the moment the right combination of date and location appears.

Tip: Vigsel Alert watches all available slots and venues in real time. Set your date range and we send you an instant alert whenever a matching slot — at any venue — opens up. That gives you the best possible chance of getting there first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I filter by venue when booking?

In the etjanster.stockholm.se system, the venue is tied to the individual time slot — you see which location is attached when you select an available time. There is no built-in filter for "show only City Hall slots".

Can we hold the ceremony at a private location — a hotel, garden, or outdoor space we choose?

Yes, it is possible to apply for a ceremony at a location of your choosing (förrättning på annan plats). This requires a separate permit, additional fee, and approval from the City of Stockholm. Contact the municipality directly for details.

How many guests can we bring?

Guest numbers are limited by venue capacity. City Hall and Bondepalatset accommodate more guests than a typical district office ceremony room. Check with the City of Stockholm at the time of booking for exact limits at your venue.

Are ceremonies available on weekends?

Yes, but Saturdays are by far the most popular day. Most Saturday slots fill immediately when published. Weekdays and Sundays are considerably easier to book and are worth considering if you have flexibility on which day of the week you marry.

Can we photograph and film the ceremony?

Yes, photography and filming are welcome at most venues. Rules can vary by location — confirm with the officiant or the City of Stockholm in advance.
